How to Choose a Safe Aesthetic Practitioner

The UK aesthetics industry is booming, but it's also largely unregulated. This means anyone — regardless of qualifications — can legally perform injectable treatments. Here's how to protect yourself.

Check Their Qualifications

The most important thing you can do is verify your practitioner's qualifications. Look for:

  • Medical qualification: Doctors, dentists, nurses, and pharmacists have rigorous medical training. A dental surgeon (like Dr Niru) has spent years studying facial anatomy in depth.
  • Registration: Check they're registered with their professional body (GDC for dentists, GMC for doctors, NMC for nurses). You can verify this online.
  • Specialist training: Ask where they trained in aesthetics and how many treatments they've performed.

Ask About the Products

Reputable practitioners use CE-marked, premium products from established manufacturers (such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Allergan). Be wary of practitioners who won't tell you what they're using.

Look for a Clinical Environment

Treatments should be performed in a clean, clinical setting — not in a kitchen or bedroom. A proper clinic will have:

  • Clinical-grade hygiene standards
  • Emergency equipment and medications
  • Proper lighting and equipment
  • A private, comfortable treatment room

Read Reviews — But Read Carefully

Google reviews and before-and-after photos are helpful, but look for patterns rather than individual reviews. Consistent praise for natural results, professionalism, and aftercare is a good sign.

Trust Your Instincts

During your consultation, pay attention to how you feel. A good practitioner will:

  • Listen to your concerns without judgement
  • Explain the treatment clearly, including risks
  • Never pressure you into treatment
  • Be happy to answer all your questions
  • Say no if a treatment isn't suitable for you

Red Flags to Watch For

  • No consultation before treatment
  • Unwillingness to share qualifications
  • Pressure to book on the spot
  • Prices that seem too good to be true
  • No aftercare plan or follow-up
