Aftercare Guide
Lip Fillers Aftercare
Lip filler aftercare is simpler than most patients expect, but the first 48 hours really matter. Here's exactly what to do — and what to avoid.
First 24 Hours
The most important window for optimal results
- Apply cold compress (wrapped in gauze/cloth) for 10 minutes at a time to reduce swelling
- Drink plenty of water, but avoid drinking with a straw for 48 hours
- Avoid hot drinks and spicy foods for 24 hours (heat worsens swelling)
- Keep lips clean — gentle lip balm is fine after 12 hours
- Sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow
- Sleep on your back for 2-3 nights
First Week
- Swelling peaks at 24-48 hours — don't judge your results yet
- Any bruising resolves within 5-10 days
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
- No facials, lip products with active ingredients (retinol, acid) for 1 week
- No dental work for 2 weeks
- Your lips may feel firm and uneven initially — this fully settles by week 2
Long-Term Care
- Final result visible at 2 weeks
- Lip filler typically lasts 6-12 months
- The lips have more movement than most areas, so they metabolise filler faster
- Stay hydrated — hyaluronic acid holds water
- Use SPF lip balm when outdoors
- Book top-ups before the filler has fully dissolved for a consistent, natural look
What to Avoid
- ●Kissing, hard pressing, or vigorous lip movements for 24 hours
- ●Drinking through a straw for 48 hours
- ●Hot drinks and spicy food for 24 hours
- ●Exercise, saunas, steam rooms for 48 hours
- ●Alcohol for 24 hours
- ●Lip products with retinol, acid, or active ingredients for 7 days
- ●Dental work for 2 weeks

Common Questions
How swollen will my lips get?
Swelling varies — some people get very little, others look significantly swollen for 2-3 days. It always fully resolves. Plan your treatment at least 2 weeks before any important event.
When can I wear lipstick?
Wait 24 hours. Use a new, clean lipstick (or sanitise an existing one with alcohol) to minimise infection risk.
Why do my lips feel lumpy?
Initial firmness is completely normal and settles within 2 weeks as the filler integrates. If lumps persist, Dr Niru can assess at your complimentary follow-up.
What if I get a cold sore?
Lip filler can occasionally trigger a cold sore outbreak if you're prone to them. If you've had cold sores before, mention this at consultation — Dr Niru may recommend prophylactic antivirals.
