Congratulations on your lip filler treatment! Proper aftercare is essential for the best results. Here's your complete guide to looking after your lips in the days and weeks following treatment.

The First 24 Hours

This is the most important window for aftercare:

  • Apply a cold compress gently to reduce swelling (wrapped in a cloth, not directly on skin)
  • Avoid touching or pressing your lips — let the filler settle
  • Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water
  • Sleep elevated — use an extra pillow to help reduce swelling overnight
  • Avoid makeup on or around the lips for 24 hours
  • No kissing or excessive lip movement for 24 hours

Days 2-7

Swelling is completely normal and will gradually subside:

  • Swelling peaks at 24-48 hours — don't judge your results yet!
  • Mild bruising is possible and will fade within 5-10 days
  • Avoid intense exercise for 48 hours (increased blood flow can worsen swelling)
  • Avoid extreme temperatures — no saunas, steam rooms, or very hot baths
  • No dental work for 2 weeks
  • Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours (it can increase bruising)

Weeks 2-4

Your lips are settling into their final shape:

  • Results are visible from around day 5, but the final result is at 2-4 weeks
  • Any asymmetry from swelling should have resolved by week 2
  • Stay hydrated — hyaluronic acid filler loves water, so good hydration helps maintain results
  • Use SPF lip balm when outdoors — UV exposure can break down filler faster
  • Attend your follow-up appointment with Dr Niru to assess results

When to Contact Us

Contact Dr Niru immediately if you experience:

  • Severe or increasing pain after 48 hours
  • Unusual discolouration (white patches, blue/grey colour)
  • Hard lumps that don't resolve with gentle massage
  • Signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, discharge)
  • Any concerns at all — we'd rather you contact us unnecessarily than worry in silence

How to Make Your Results Last

  • Stay hydrated (aim for 2 litres of water per day)
  • Use a nourishing lip balm daily
  • Protect lips from sun exposure
  • Avoid smoking (it accelerates filler breakdown)
  • Book your top-up before the filler has completely worn off (typically 6-12 months)

Your follow-up appointment is included with your treatment. Dr Niru will assess your results and discuss whether any minor adjustments are needed.
