Lip filler dissolving is one of the most reassuring things about modern hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers — they're not permanent. If you don't like the result, react badly, or just change your mind, the filler can usually be dissolved safely. Here's a complete, honest guide to how it works.

What Is "Dissolving"?

Hyaluronic acid lip filler can be broken down using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Your body actually produces this enzyme naturally — it's what gradually breaks down filler over time. When we want to speed that up, a tiny amount of additional hyaluronidase is injected into the area. The filler typically dissolves within 24-48 hours.

This is one of the major advantages of HA fillers over older permanent fillers like silicone — and a key reason why we never use permanent fillers in lips at The Azim Clinic.

When You Might Want Filler Dissolved

### 1. You're unhappy with the look

The most common reason. Maybe the lips are too big, asymmetric, lumpy, or just not what you wanted. Dissolving is a perfectly reasonable response.

### 2. Filler has migrated

Sometimes filler can move outside the lip border (the "filler moustache" look). Dissolving the migrated portion is the safe correction.

### 3. You have a vascular complication

Rarely, filler can press on or block a blood vessel. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate dissolving — which is why your practitioner must always have hyaluronidase on hand. Always.

### 4. You're getting an infection

Severe infection in filler may need the filler removed alongside antibiotics.

### 5. You want a fresh start

Maybe you've had filler for years and want to see what your natural lips look like, or want to start over with a different product or technique.

When Dissolving Is NOT the Right Answer

  • Day 1-2 swelling. What you're seeing is swelling, not the final result. Wait two weeks before judging.
  • Slight asymmetry the day after. Same — wait for it to settle.
  • You're between treatments. If your filler is wearing off naturally, you don't need to dissolve it.
  • Anxiety alone. Sometimes patients want dissolving because they're anxious about the result. A consultation conversation often resolves this without dissolving.

What Happens at the Dissolving Appointment

1. Consultation. Dr Niru reviews what was placed (if she did the original treatment) or asks for details from the previous practitioner. We discuss what you want dissolved.

2. Patch test. True allergic reactions to hyaluronidase are very rare but possible. A small patch test on the forearm 30 minutes before treatment is standard at our clinic.

3. Numbing. Topical numbing cream is applied to the lips for 15-20 minutes.

4. The dissolving. A tiny amount of hyaluronidase is injected directly into the filler. The injection itself takes minutes.

5. Aftercare instructions. Avoid heat, intense exercise, and alcohol for 24-48 hours.

Realistic Timeline

Hour 1: Mild swelling and tenderness. Looks similar to the original filler day.

24-48 hours: Filler visibly starting to reduce. Lips may look slightly uneven during this transition.

Week 1: Most of the filler should now be dissolved.

Week 2: Result fully settled. You can now decide whether to leave the lips as-is or have new filler.

Risks of Dissolving

Hyaluronidase is generally very safe but not zero-risk:

  • True allergic reaction (very rare). This is why we patch test.
  • Dissolving more than intended. Hyaluronidase doesn't perfectly stop at the filler boundary; it can dissolve a small amount of your natural hyaluronic acid in surrounding tissue. The body replaces this within days.
  • Bruising and swelling. Normal for any injection.
  • Asymmetric dissolving if not enough product is used. Sometimes a second session is needed.

Why Practitioner Choice Matters

Dissolving is a medical procedure. Hyaluronidase must be: - Administered by a qualified clinician - With patch testing protocol - With access to emergency adrenaline (for anaphylaxis, very rare) - With knowledge of facial anatomy to avoid injecting into vessels

This is one of the strongest arguments for choosing a clinician-led practice — preferably medically/dentally qualified — for filler dissolving rather than non-medical injectors.

How Much Does Dissolving Cost?

At The Azim Clinic, dissolving starts from £150 for a single area. Most lip dissolvings are completed in a single session. Complex multi-area or migrated filler may need a second session at additional cost — discussed transparently at consultation.

Booking Filler Dissolving

If you're considering having lip filler dissolved — whether yours or work done elsewhere — book a free 30-minute consultation with Dr Niru first. We'll review what you want to achieve, examine the lips, and give you an honest, no-pressure recommendation. Sometimes the answer is "yes, dissolve". Sometimes it's "wait two weeks". Either way, we'll be straight with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to dissolve lip filler?+

The dissolving process itself takes 5-10 minutes. Visible reduction begins within 24-48 hours. Full settled result is usually visible within 2 weeks.

Does dissolving lip filler hurt?+

It's mildly uncomfortable rather than painful — similar to the original injection. Most patients describe it as bearable and brief. Topical numbing cream can be used.

Can all lip fillers be dissolved?+

Only hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers can be safely dissolved with hyaluronidase. Permanent or semi-permanent fillers (silicone, PMMA) cannot be dissolved this way and require surgical removal — which is why we never use those products.

Will my lips return to exactly how they were before?+

Mostly yes, but not always exactly. Lips can sometimes stretch slightly with prolonged filler, so after dissolving they may look very slightly different to your original lip. Most patients are happy with the result.

How soon can I have new filler after dissolving?+

Wait at least 2-4 weeks before any new filler. Your tissue needs time to settle and any remaining hyaluronidase needs to fully clear so it doesn't immediately dissolve the new filler.
