Profhilo and Sculptra are both injectable treatments that stimulate your skin to do something — but they're not the same thing, and they don't compete for the same job. Here's a straight, clinician-written comparison so you can work out which (if either) is right for you.

The 10-Second Summary

  • Profhilo = ultra-pure hyaluronic acid. Hydrates and bio-remodels skin from within. Two sessions, four weeks apart. Results in 4-6 weeks. Lasts ~6 months. From £250/session.
  • Sculptra = poly-L-lactic acid. Stimulates collagen production over months. Usually 2-3 sessions. Results in 3-6 months. Lasts up to 2 years. From £400-600/session.
  • Different jobs. Profhilo is more about skin quality. Sculptra is more about volume restoration through new collagen.

What Profhilo Does

Profhilo is a unique hybrid hyaluronic acid product. When injected, it: 1. Hydrates skin immediately 2. Spreads horizontally through tissue (rather than staying as a bolus like filler) 3. Stimulates collagen and elastin production over weeks

The visible result: glossier, plumper, more "lit from within" skin. Mild improvement in skin laxity. Fine line softening.

It's not a filler — it doesn't add volume in a specific spot. Think of it as a hydration and quality treatment.

What Sculptra Does

Sculptra contains tiny particles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — the same material used in dissolvable surgical sutures. When injected into the deeper layers of skin, it acts as a scaffold around which your body builds new collagen.

The visible result: gradual restoration of facial volume over months. Better contour. Slightly fuller, healthier-looking face. Can address sagging cheeks, temple hollowing, and overall facial volume loss.

This is volume restoration through *new collagen growth* — not filler-style instant volume.

Side-by-Side

| | Profhilo | Sculptra | |---|---|---| | Material | Hyaluronic acid (HA) | Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) | | What it does | Hydrates + bio-remodels skin | Stimulates new collagen in deeper tissue | | Best for | Skin glow, mild laxity, fine lines | Volume restoration, contour, deeper laxity | | How injected | 5 small points per side (BAP technique) | Multiple injections across treatment area | | Results visible | 4-6 weeks after 2nd session | 3-6 months (gradual build) | | How long it lasts | ~6 months | Up to 2 years | | Number of sessions | 2 (4 weeks apart) | Usually 2-3 | | Downtime | Minimal — small bumps for 24h | Mild bruising/swelling 1-2 days | | Cost | From £250/session | From £400-600/session | | Total course cost | ~£500 | ~£1,200-1,800 |

Who Should Consider Profhilo

  • Skin starting to look dull or tired
  • Fine lines that aren't deep enough for filler
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Want a "natural glow" boost
  • Lower commitment, lower cost
  • Trying bio-stimulating injectables for the first time

Who Should Consider Sculptra

  • Significant volume loss in cheeks, temples, jawline
  • Sagging skin where filler isn't enough
  • Want long-lasting (1-2 year) results from a single course
  • Comfortable with delayed gratification — results build slowly
  • Higher budget
  • Have realistic expectations about what new collagen can achieve

Can You Combine Them?

Yes, and many patients do. The two work in different tissue layers: - Sculptra in deeper tissue → structural collagen - Profhilo in superficial skin → hydration and glow

A common approach: Sculptra course first (for structural change), then Profhilo for surface skin quality. Always under guidance of an experienced practitioner.

Common Misconceptions

"Profhilo is just expensive moisturiser." False. It bio-stimulates collagen and elastin in measurable amounts. It's not the same as topical hyaluronic acid.

"Sculptra makes you look fake." Only if poorly placed in too high doses too quickly. Done correctly, Sculptra is one of the most natural-looking volume restoration options because the volume *is* your own collagen.

"You only need one Profhilo session." False. The standard protocol is two sessions four weeks apart. A single session will give very limited results.

"Sculptra results are permanent." False. The PLLA dissolves over 18-24 months. The collagen built around it persists somewhat but also turns over naturally.

Risks

Profhilo: - Small bumps at injection points (resolve in 24-48h) - Mild bruising - Very rare: allergic reaction - Very rare: vascular complication (any injection carries this)

Sculptra: - Bruising and swelling for 1-2 days - Small nodules under skin (rare with proper technique and dilution) - Asymmetry (corrected with follow-up) - Very rare: vascular complication

Both treatments require an experienced injector. Sculptra in particular is unforgiving — overcorrection is harder to reverse than HA filler dissolving.

Cost Comparison Over Two Years

If you have a Profhilo course every 6 months for 2 years: ~£2,000 total.

If you have a Sculptra course once that lasts 2 years: ~£1,200-1,800 total.

Sculptra can be more cost-effective per year *if* it's the right treatment. But cost shouldn't drive the decision — the right treatment for your concerns should.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the main difference between Profhilo and Sculptra?+

Profhilo is hyaluronic acid that hydrates and bio-remodels skin from within, with results lasting around 6 months. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates new collagen growth in deeper layers, with results lasting up to 2 years but taking longer to appear.

Which works faster, Profhilo or Sculptra?+

Profhilo. Visible results from Profhilo appear within 4-6 weeks of the second session. Sculptra results build gradually over 3-6 months as new collagen forms.

Which lasts longer, Profhilo or Sculptra?+

Sculptra lasts longer per course — up to 2 years versus around 6 months for Profhilo. However, Profhilo maintenance is more affordable and many patients prefer the lower commitment.

Can I have both Profhilo and Sculptra?+

Yes — they work in different layers and can complement each other. Sculptra in deeper tissue for structural collagen, Profhilo in superficial skin for hydration and glow. Always discuss with your practitioner.

Does The Azim Clinic offer Sculptra?+

Currently we offer Profhilo, skin boosters, dermal fillers and Obagi medical-grade skincare. If Sculptra is recommended for your concerns, we'll be honest about that and refer you appropriately.
