What Happens If I Stop Getting Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

One of the most common fears about starting anti-wrinkle injections is: "What if I can't keep up with them? Will my wrinkles come back worse than before?" Here's the honest answer from a dental surgeon.
The Short Answer
If you stop anti-wrinkle injections, your skin will gradually return to the state it would have been in naturally — no worse, no better, than if you'd never started.
The myth that "wrinkles come back worse" is exactly that — a myth. It's not supported by clinical evidence.
Why People Think Wrinkles "Come Back Worse"
There are a few reasons this myth persists:
1. Unfamiliarity with your natural face. If you've been having treatment for years, seeing your unfrozen face again after it wears off can feel jarring. The wrinkles aren't actually worse — you're just noticing them again after a period without them.
2. Natural ageing continued underneath. If you started anti-wrinkle injections at 35 and stopped at 45, you've aged 10 years. When the effect wears off, you see your 45-year-old face — not your 35-year-old face. The injections weren't stopping the ageing process, just masking the movement-related lines.
3. Comparison to treated results. Going from "perfectly smooth" to "normal" feels like going backward, even though it's just returning to baseline.
What Actually Happens When You Stop
Over 3-4 months after your last treatment: - Muscle activity gradually returns to full strength - Dynamic wrinkles become visible again when you express emotions - Static wrinkles remain as they were before your last treatment - No permanent changes either way
The One Genuine Benefit of Long-Term Treatment
Consistent, long-term anti-wrinkle treatment CAN mean the muscles gradually weaken over time. This is why patients who have treatment for years often find they need less frequent appointments — the muscles aren't working as hard.
When you stop, those muscles slowly regain their previous strength, but it can take years to return to baseline.
Should You Start If You're Not Sure You'll Continue?
Honestly, yes. There's no penalty for trying it once. If you don't like it, or the budget doesn't suit long-term, you simply stop. Your face returns to normal in 3-4 months with no lasting effects.
The only genuine regret patients report isn't starting — it's waiting too long to start, once lines have become deeply etched.
When to Stop
Good reasons to stop or pause anti-wrinkle injections: - Pregnancy or trying to conceive - Financial priorities shifting - You simply don't love the look anymore - Your face feels "done enough"
All of these are fine. There's no medical harm in stopping.
