Treatment Comparison
Retinol vs Tretinoin: Over-the-Counter vs Prescription
Both are vitamin A derivatives that improve skin quality. But they're not equally potent — and that affects results, side effects, and how to choose between them.
Retinol (OTC)
From £20
Best For
- ●Beginners to vitamin A products
- ●Sensitive skin
- ●Maintenance once you've got results elsewhere
- ●Lower-budget routine
How It Works
Vitamin A converted in the skin to retinoic acid. Gentler than tretinoin. Available without prescription.
Results
Subtle improvement over 3-6 months of consistent use.
Appointment Duration
Apply nightly
Tretinoin (Prescription)
From £30
Best For
- ●Faster, more visible results
- ●Acne treatment
- ●Significant fine lines or sun damage
- ●Patients who can tolerate the initial irritation
How It Works
Pure retinoic acid — already in the active form. Far more potent than retinol. Prescription only.
Results
Visible improvement in 6-12 weeks. Stronger long-term result.
Appointment Duration
Apply nightly (start 2-3 nights/week)
Which Should You Choose?
Tretinoin works faster and gives stronger results, but isn't tolerable for everyone. Start with retinol if new to vitamin A, or jump to tretinoin (under guidance) for specific concerns. Obagi Nu-Derm uses tretinoin as part of a guided system.
Can You Have Both?
No — they target the same receptor. Use one or the other. If you're using tretinoin, you don't need retinol.
Common Questions
What's the side effect profile?
Both can cause initial dryness, peeling and redness ('retinisation'). Far more pronounced with tretinoin. Start slowly — pea-sized amount, 2-3 nights/week — and build up.
Can I use tretinoin without a prescription?
In the UK, no — tretinoin is Prescription Only Medicine. Anyone selling it without prescription is acting illegally. We can prescribe through the Obagi Nu-Derm system.
How long until I see results?
Retinol: 12-16 weeks. Tretinoin: 6-12 weeks. Both require consistent daily use.
